The National Do Not Call Registry can drastically reduce the number of telemarketing calls you receive. Register online at www.donotcall.gov or call 888-382-1222. For TTY, call 866-290-4236. You must call from the telephone number you wish to register.
The National Do Not Call Registry has been established to address unwelcome telemarketing calls. This registry applies to all telemarketers with the exception of businesses with whom you have an existing relationship and certain non-profit and political organizations. Commercial telemarketers are not allowed to call you if your number is listed on the registry.
You also may register, or obtain additional information, via the Internet at www.donotcall.gov. Inclusion of your telephone number on the national Do-Not-Call Registry will be effective 31 days following your registration. Your number will remain on the registry permanently. You can also remove your number from the list at any time. If you’ve already added your phone number to the Do Not Call Registry and are still getting a lot of unwanted calls, odds are the calls are from scammers. The Do Not Call Registry stops sales calls from real companies. The Registry is a list that tells telemarketers what numbers not to call. The Registry can’t stop calls from scammers who ignore the Registry. Even though the Registry can’t stop all of the unwanted calls you’re getting, being on the Registry could make it easier for you to spot scam calls. If a caller is ignoring the Registry or making an illegal robocall, hang up. There’s a good chance it’s a scam. Don’t press buttons to be taken off a call list or to talk to a live person. It might lead to more unwanted calls. Instead, report it with the Federal Trade Commission. Learn more at ftc.gov/robocalls.
